Baroness : An Experience You Could Not Stop Smiling Throughout: Live in Albany, NY

I had been anticipating Sunday night for what seemed like forever. 6 months had passed since my last concert and I was long overdue. The latest Baroness single “Borderlines” hasn’t left my head since it’s March release and I am practically counting the days until I can get my copy of Gold & Grey on vinyl. (Out July 14th) For me, this would be the type of show right before a new album hits where you are desperately hoping to hear new material before all your friends. Am I a big fan of Baroness?? Hmmm maybe just a little bit.  Did I also mention Zeal & Ardor would be opening?

Zeal & Ardor Set List:

  1. Sacrilegium I

  2. In Ashes

  3. Servants

  4. Come on down

  5. Blood in the river

  6. Gravediggers Chant

  7. Waste

  8. Don’t you Dare

  9. Devil is Fine

  10. Baphomet

The venue lights dimmed and excited screams from scattered Zeal & Ardor fans erupted from the crowd. I could tell many people in attendance had not yet had the pleasure of experiencing this truly unique Swiss band. Imagine mixing elements of black metal, slave hymns and blues into what I can only describe as musical perfection. It’s dark, raw and angry and by sets end the entire crowd was fixated on every word coming out of singer Manuel Gagneux’s mouth. “Right hand up! Left hand down! Flame on the top of a moon around!” Fists all around pumping in rhythm as if hypnotized by music. I cannot stress enough how amazing this band is live. They sadly were limited to 10 songs but I don’t think a single person left that night without adding them to their Spotify playlists.

Baroness Set List:

  1. A horse called Golgatha

  2. Morningstar

  3. March to the sea

  4. Green Theme

  5. Cocainium

  6. Borderlines

  7. If I have to wake up (Would you stop the rain?)

  8. Fugue

  9. Eula

  10. Seasons

  11. Shock me

  12. Isak

  13. Take my bones away

Baroness were up next and to quote Author Bret Easton Ellis, “Relief washes over me in an awesome wave”. I honestly feel like most of the people in attendance were there to see them and they exploded onto the stage like a cannon blast. Have you ever been to a show that, even though you were hearing songs you loved, you could feel no real passion or excitement behind the performance? That was not the case in Albany, New York this night. Baroness are the definition of passion! Every single song was played with the energy as if had never been played before. John Baizley and Co had people going absolutely nuts. The crowd drowned out the music as they screamed back the words “If I have to wake up! Would you stop the rain!?!” Genuinely, one of those experiences where you simply could not stop smiling throughout. I whole heartedly believe the expression “Getting your money’s worth” was created for bands like this. They covered pretty much the spectrum of their catalog and even treated fans to “Seasons” a new song which according to them they had only just played for the first time the night before. A quick side note, the video for the song was released today and can be seen here (Here) or insert video. I cannot say enough good things about Baroness. They are one of those bands they truly love what they are doing. I highly recommend ordering a copy of their upcoming album Grey & Gold or catching them on tour this summer (Dates Below)
