Riverside Delivers Over 2 Hours of Emotional, Melancholic Music: Live in Copenhagen, DK
Polish prog titans from Riverside visited Copenhagen to promote and celebrate success of their latest album, ‘Wasteland’. The show, which was organized in cooperation with KPM Concerts, started shortly after 8PM with brief introduction from Karsten Mortensen – KPM’s CEO – presenting the band and a supporting act for the night.
Lesoir – an art rock band from Netherlands was the opener for the evening. Band led by Maartje Meessen presented a setlist consisting of 8 tracks which allowed them to introduce Dutch rockers to fans gathered in the venue. Combination of rock sounds with more calm music moments and high, fragile vocals of Maartje filled in 45 minutes show after which Lesoir said ‘Thank you for warm welcome’ and left the stage, leaving the space for the evenings headliner.
Mariusz Duda and company entered the stage with the sounds of ‘Wasteland Soundscape’ to jump directly into first heavy chords of ‘Acid Rain’ - no unnecessary introductions and welcome, just music. Band continued the show with ‘Vale of Tears’ another heavy song from ‘Wasteland’, followed by instrumental ‘Reality Dream I’ to finally slow down and present more melancholic side with ‘Lament’. Duda explained to the fans their take on being appointed as a classic prog band and different prog rock styles what caused a burst of laughter what was followed with another statement from bands leader, “we are Riverside and we play songs. The difference between us and other prog bands is that you feel younger after our show”.
One of the best moments of the evening was a performance of ‘ Lost (Why Should I Be Frightened By a Hat?)’ where the audience joined the band in the chorus part. The concert was closed with an encore consisting of ‘02 Panic Room’ and dedicated to late band member – Piotr Grudzinski – ‘River Down Below’.
The evening has finished after 11PM. Riverside delivered over 2 hours of emotional and melancholic music with heavier elements. Fans were leaving the venue satisfied with what they received and what I understood from the chats in the bar - Copenhagen is expecting to have Riverside back. It was definitely a good evening full of really good music.
